Stagecoach in Swindon started as part of the Bristol Omnibus Company, who operated all over the West Country including Swindon, Devizes, Bath and of course Bristol.
In 1974 Bristol became part of the National Bus Company and started using the Swindon & District name in Swindon in 1985 just before deregulation.
In 1985 Swindon & District joined the other former Bristol companies in Cheltenham, Gloucester and Stroud as part of Western Travel which also included Midland Red South and Red & White.
Just before the take over of Western Travel by Stagecoach in 1993, Circle Line of Gloucester was taken over by Western Travel.
Western Travel was purchased by Stagecoach in 1993, and Stagecoach livery was slowly applied the the companies then standard ex-NBC buses (Leyland Olympians and Bristol VRT's with E.C.W bodywork and Leyland Nationals for most bus work and the smart silver with red & blue stripe minibuses which were Ford Transits and MCW Metroriders although Swindon did have 2 33 seat Mercedes 811D minibuses and Stagecoach standard Alexander bodied Olympians).
Stagecoach promptly replaced most of Swindon's buses with Volvo B6, then Dennis Dart buses with Alexander Dash bodywork, Mercedes 709D minibuses with Alexander Sprint bodywork, and when Cirencester outpost became part of Swindon, Volvo B10M with Alexander PS bodywork.
Today Stagecoach in Swindon (as Swindon & District became after Stagecoach rebranded its operations and livery in 2001) operate Dennis Dart SLF buses with Alexander ALX200 bodywork, Alexander Dennis Darts and M.A.N 18.240 (Enviro300 bodywork) and Alexander Dennis Enviro200 Darts for single deck work (5 Volvo B10M's and one of the step-entrance Dash bodied Darts still remain), and use Volvo Olympians form London (both Alexander and Northern Counties bodied) and both new and ex-Manchester TransBus and Alexander Dennis Trident double deckers with ALX400 bodywork, Scania Enviro400 buses on the 49 and 55 and 8 Stagecoach GOLD branded Scania/Enviro400 buses on the 66.
